I've got a client that randomly has messages disappear from the inbox. This happens sometimes (very randomly) before being read, and most recently it happened after the message was opened. I only have one particular user reporting this, so it's real puzzling.

I've verified all the server and client settings and tried most of the suggestions from this link:

The only thing I have not done yet is delete and recreate the user (for fear of losing emails - so any suggestions for safely doing this is also welcome). I've come to a roadblock and would greatly appreciate ANY other suggestions or advise on this.

Did you ask the user if anyone might know their password and is secretly logging in. Check the PO for logins for this client and you'll be able to see IP addresses where they logged in. Have them change their password just in case.

Run a full diagnostics of their mailbox just in case there is some corruption in the database. Don't delete/recreate - that's a last resort unless they have absolutely nothing in their mailbox, address book that they would want to keep.

Thanks for your quick response. I suspected someone logging in secretly and had the user change the password. Unfortunately, it happened again after the password was changed. I removed all proxy access as well to eliminate the possibility of someone with proxy access deleting them, so I'm still stumped.

I REALLY don't want to recreate the user - but if I archived and saved the .nab file, wouldn't it be as simple as importing the .nab file for the address book and accessing the archive to get the saved emails back?

Any further suggestions STILL welcome.

Yes - true what you said about recreating, but you might lose some mails between deleting and recreating. And I wouldn't delete the user immediately and then recreate. NDS needs time to flush the user out before creating again.

Interesting. I have a customer with a few reports from end-users with similar symptoms. They are on 2-3 post offices and in looking through the log on the POA, it seems that the mail is deleted about a minute after they log in. The only change we can correlate is that they've activated the "Mail Retention Service" on the domain (gw utilities-> client options->environment->retention) and locked it on the domain.

Of course, I would expect this to occur for every user on those post offices not just one here and there, but if this is the case, excluding these users (or POs) from that service may drive the issue away. BTW, they are using Quest Archive Manager (don't have the version handy but installed it in December '07).

HTH. lanman99: If you've fixed your issue, can you post the resolution? Thx.

Interesting?!?...to say the least [neutral]. The problem has happened once more since this posting. I've repeated my steps (validate database, GWCheck..etc) - what's "interesting" is that I found the message that the user reported as disappeared in the MTA log as delivered. The user actually read the message, then it was gone later. Did another mailbox maintenance, and advised the user to let me know if anyone reports sending a message and not getting a response.

Don't know if you'd consider that a resolution ??!!?

So it seems the problem has been "repaired". The only other thing I did was verify the user had actually changed the password. I've also in the interim updated to 7.0.3 and rebuilt the database. The problem has not been reported since my last post, so this is all I have to offer as a "solution". Only in IT!!![thumbsup2]
