Are messages that are sent to individuals internally first routed to the internet and back in? Or, does groupwise know that they are intended for internal users? I think our server is first routing smtp outbound then back in!!!

Groupwise routes them internally.
Think about it. If GW sent them to "the internet", who would it send them to?

It is possible that someone has configured GW to send all email to an external host who would virus check them, but it's unlikely, and you would know it was happening when that external host sent you the bill...

It IS possible for internal messages to go out through the GWIA and back in. But this is not normal.

It usually happens if you have GWIA aliases, but is something that would gradually happen over time. Even if you've moved past GWIA aliases, if people have stuff in their frequent contact list, it's possible that stuff could go out through the GWIA.

You can test this easily by turning your GWIA Logging to VERBOSE, then just watch it for a while. If the sender and receiver and both internal users, you know this is happening.

My feeble brain is not grasping this. Go out to where? And what's bouncing them back? Is it just doing a loopback?

It's not something you want to do. It's just something that could happen. It usually is a result of many years of upgrades and frequent contact lists that don't ever get deleted. Back in the 'old' days, it was necessary to help any Internet outbound messages along by including the gateway in the email address. Otherwise you couldn't send outbound mail, only internal.

Message goes from USERA to USERB. Normally this would be handled at the post office. But if you send mail from USERA to GWIA:USERB, it will force it to go to the GWIA to be processed. (Note that I'm not 100% sure on the syntax) The GWIA will then handle it just like any other incoming email, identify it as a domain on its system, and send it back down the normal route.

It's not that easy to identify right away, and you usually come across it when troubleshooting other symptoms. One symptom is having a mail show up on the GWIA from an internal user to an internal user. Another is if you see errors trying to resolve your own domain name on the GWIA. Another one could be having internal email delivered with the EMAIL address displaying instead of the FIRST NAME LAST NAME format that you would normally see.
