I am running Groupwise 5.5 Enhancement pack on a Novell Server running Netware 4.11 and Backup Exec for Netware Version 7.5.

My backups have always backed up the GW postoffice and database files with a warning that files were "backed up while in use".

Although they are backed up "while in use" nevertheless they are backed up.

Am I setting myself up for a big-time disaster here or are my files restoreable??!!

Anybody ever tried a restore of a Postoffice and Database with Backup Exec 7.5??

I am not that familiar with BE, but have you tried restoring to a storage area other than the origin? We use to use ArchServe (what a disappointment since CA took over ownership) and would periodically do a random restore to a non production server. It helped us a couple of times in identifying potential backup problems. Just a thought. As for the warning message about "Files In Use", I would expect this since GW databases are always in use if the agent databases being backed up were not shutdown. Good Luck!

Thanks!

Good idea!...I'll try and restore to another server and see what I get.

I have novell 4.11 server and Groupwise 5.5, I backup using Arcserve 6.6 and i only get 1 warning in Arcserve for my Email/Sys volume saying

Retry open file SYS:\PO\WPCSOUT\OFS\5|OFS\5\DFDF0404.000, delay 5 secs,
E3011 failed to open file SYS:\POSYS:\PO\WPCSOUT\OFS\5\DFDF04.OOO, FFFDFFF5.

aS kozmokramer suggests files are prob always in use unless you switch off server etc but perhaps to test you could create a dummy user bacl up as usual and then next day try restoring the dummy users mail from backup, that way youll know if your in a coanoe without a paddle etc etc ?

If you have tim eplsz plsz see if you can help me with

Well GroupWise is a database, so files are always open and in use. GW 6.5 is supposed to reslove this. We'll will be upgrading soon ;-) can't wait for 6.5.

In the mean time we have 5.5 on Netware 6 and Netware 5.1.
We use cron each night to shutdown GW MTA and POA run backup then use cron to start them. This won't work on the GWIA though.

I have seen a utility before never tried though

Once you run GW v6.x you can use Novell's GWTSA.NLM to allow backup of the Domain, PO and other GW objects that you specify. On v5.5 I bought an add on product from my Backup vendor for the GW Databases. If you can't upgrade from 5.5 anytime soon check with your Backup Software Co.

Just done a disaster recovery exercise for a customer of ours with Groupwise 5.5. Instead of a tape backup I used gwbackupp to copy the data to another server so the database is copied without shutting down agents. Then a tape backup of the copied data is run.

With a little work this can mean in the event of a server failure Groupwise is back and running within the hour, all be it with data that was from the last copy (The previous evening)

Have a look on novells site and get the file, It is really useful.

Anymore help give me a shout.
