Groupwise 5.5.5 client issue

I have a user who claims his client freezes everytime new mail is being received from the Internet. He claims he cannot read or respond to mail while new internet mail is being received in his mailbox. Anybody hear of this before or have any idea what could be causing his client to act up? He is using the Groupwise 5.5.5 client on a Windows 2000 PC.
