Please help. My training is basic and has been about 5 yrs ago, so I am rusty. I am using CR v8. I need a formula to combine lastname, firstname (spousename).

So to summarize it would look like this:

LastName, FirstName (SpouseName)

Sounds pretty basic, but as I said, I am pretty rusty. Thanks for the help.

Try:

{table.lastname}+ ", " +{table.firstname}+ " (" +table.spousename}+ ")"

Ok, I tried that. Here is my input {Members.LastName}+ ", " +{Members.FirstName}+ " (" +{Members.SpouseName}+ ")"

When checking I get the following error message:"The formula result must be a boolean"

???

I think you are creating the formula in the wrong area. Make sure you are not in the select expert of in a formatting formula area. Go to insert->field explorer (or directly to formula field)->formula field->new and enter your formula there. Once you have created the formula, you can insert a group on it, if you wish.
