Grouping by Partial Item Number

Hello,
I'm using Crystal 9 with SQL. I have a list of items {item.item} that I would like to group by only the 1st 8 didgts. Expected output is:

C1550316 (group)
C1550316-CT1 (detail)
C1550316-CT2
C1550316-CT3

Create a formula field with left({your.field}, 8). Use this to group.

Did you insert a group on Madawc's formula or did you just place the formula in the group header? You must insert a group on it.

Otherwise please explain what your other groups are.
