Group summaries (specified order)...print on same row?

I have a report with one patient type group in a specific order (inpatient and outpatient). I have specified my group and summarized. The problem is, the summary prints out as 2 rows:
89
90
and I need to print the summary in 2 columns:
89 90

Is there a way to have the summary print like this? A cross tab doesn't seem to be working for me either. I need to export this report in ASCII or Excel. Thanks in advance.

If you only need one group to do summarization, maybe you don't really need to implement grouping at all. Perhaps you could just use two running total formulas and place them in the report footer.

The first running total would summarize the inpatient records and have the following settings:

Field to summarize: Pick the same field you were doing the summary on before.
Type of Summary: Count (or whatever summary you were doing before)
Evaluate: Click on the "Use a formula" option and enter a formula similar to: {patient type field} = "Inpatient"
Reset: Never

The next running total would be the same, but the Use a Formula option would be completed with a formula like: {patient type field} = "Outpatient"

Place each of these running total formulas in the report footer side by side (or however you want), along with anything else that has to be exported. If you really do need the grouping for some other reason, you can use a variation on the above to achieve your goal of side by side subtotals on the same line in the report.
