Back end is windows 2000 DC with all XP SP2 client machines.

According to MS, if you want manage Windows XP Clients via Group Policy and you have a Windows 2000 DC, you have to download and install gpmc.exe for Windows XP. This will install the SP2 policies and I can manage them from my XP box. Now, the issue is, how does windows 2000 DC know to use my adm files stored on my PC??? The adm files I'm assuming are being used to control the domain are in c:\windows\inf. (These are the new ones containing XP policies). On the DC, it is located in c:\winnt\inf. These files are completely different. I'm not sure if I'm even duplicating anything. I think I've screwed up myself on this one...or maybe not...

By default when you edit a group policy it will update the ADM on the domain controller with that you have on your machine (only if it is newer). This is ok. There is nothing wrong with using the SP2 ADM files on your Windows 2000 DC to administer win2k or WinXP. It will only make changes to operating systems that have the ability for the policy to be applied.

You can even sort group policies by OS.

c:\winnt\inf is only where they are stored during installation. But when they are updated they are put in a different directory nested deeply in AD.

So essentially I can put these adm files locally on my machine in lets say "c:\gpfiles\*.adm". Then I will have to load these files via GP Management and they will get embedded deeply in AD? Correct? Location doesn't matter?
