Due to the small size of our network we only have a few servers so one of the DC's ended up holding all of our msi applications for deployment. This has worked fine for ages up until today.

We basically demoted this DC so it is now just a member server and replaced it with a new DC, we followed MS documentation on this and transferred all FSMO roles global catalogue and the member server now points to the new DNS/DC for name resolution. We encountered no errors during the demotion and Netdiag and DCdiag check out on the remaining DC's. The problem is that now software installs fail with the error below but as far as i can tell the share is exactly the same on the X DC that is now just a member server and i can access the msi files and run them manually as we always could.

ERRROR: The error was : The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.

This is a 2003 domain with XP clients.

Any ideas?

I believe your issue comes to where were the MSI files stored for these GPO's? Were they in a seperate share or stored in the sysvol share for scripts? Did the name of the DC/now member server stay the same? I believe that when you publish the application through GPO, you must browse the network (My network places/Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network) to the available share. If any of this information has changed the GPO will become invalid and you will have to publish the GPO once again.

Hi thanks for the reply, removing it from the domain and readding it seemed to so the trick. Not sure why.
