Group Layers? Er, it's a bit complicated, sorry.

My current project involves producing a technical poster. By technical, I mean there are roughly 7 different discrete elements that will fill an A0 page, and each element will have over 500 objects each, with one in particular having over 1500. As you can imagine, the Object manager for this .cdr is getting fairly cluttered.

So yesterday, having finished the main feature of this poster, I grouped it together so that I could easily move it around in order to compose the poster. However, 'finished' is not an exact term, and today I had to change something. So I ungrouped it. To my shock and horror, all the 1500+ objects now fell into the same layer, and did not return to their original layers like I hoped they would have! So now I am left with the task of separating out all those objects into their respective layers again.

So that is my situation. Basically, I want to be able to compose the finished poster, which includes several elements, each of which are made up of many objects spanning many layers, without 'flattening' those objects into the same layer.

I thought OLE would be the answer, but it doesn't seem to work the same way with .cdr's! (as in, when you make an edit, it doesn't update the source file) So the next best thing would be to have the ability to 'group' layers, or to 'group' an object but still retain the original layering of that object.

I'm also thinking of composing the poster via OLE in something like Publisher or even (dare I say it) Illustrator!

Any ideas?

Aha! I've just discovered how to make OLE work properly with .cdr's. Wooohooo!

You can still use layers, but try instead of grouping them make the layer/s you don't want to moce locked. I also overide the colour in that layer so I can tell which is on what layer, just click offat print time.
