Group by formula for first 5 characters 1

Hello,
I am trying to group my report by the first 5 characters
I am using this formula but it is giving me just the 5th char.

{SAMPLE.SAMPLETYPE}[1]



Please help. Ultimately I need to group then sum for each group.
