I have a spreadsheet of data that I will attempt to partially replicate in a demonstration below.

OK, Column A below is the main category and repeats over and over. Column B is always a unique value for whatever color, so Bob will never show up more than once in Red. However, Bob can be assigned to multiple colors, so he may show up in yellow, or blue, or both. I am just looking to collapse the color category. So, I would love if it was like below.

Red
• Name1
• Name2
• Name3
Blue
• Name4
• Name5
• Name6
Etc, etc, etc

Instead of like this….

Red Joe
Red David
Red Bob
Red Corey
Red Sarah
Red Matthew
Red Aaron
Blue Tim
Blue Ryan
Blue Amy
Blue Sue
Yellow Murray
Yellow Jose
Yellow Earl
Yellow Sam
Yellow Trina
Yellow Tara
Yellow Lamar
Yellow Michael
Yellow Chuck

Is there any possible way to accomplish this with Excel? I attempted to use the "group" functionality and was unable to get that to go successfully. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi,

Use the PivotTable wizard.

Thank you! For some reason, I thought pivot tables were only used for numbers and calculations. I didn't know it could be used like that.

or you could use the list that you don't like, and Conditional Format the columns containing the colors to "hide" the font by shading it the same as the cell interior color.
