Is there anyway to have a widget span two or more cells in GridLayout?

To get this type of functionality you need to move up to the always fearsome GridBagLayout. It is really not as difficult to use as it may appear in the beginning. Browse through the Swing Tutorial at java.sun.com if you get the chance.

BTW, most of the time you can get the effect you are looking for without going to GridBagLayout if you nest a varity of different layout managers (not in all cases though). If may well be easier to use GridBagLayout to do what you want though.
