Someone has raised the issue of my organisation moving to Grid Computing. I have read a bit about Grid computing today and my general impression is that this is a new technology moving out of academia into the 'real' world.

Does any one have any thoughts about how Grid Computing will impact IT ? Is it a step towards Arnie's Terminator future ?

Thanks for the pointer - not bad if a bit of an IBM sales site ( but aint they all ? ). Still the other sites I looked at were a bit highbrow for me and as usual there is little history of the subject - you come in at the tail end of the discussion.

My personal view is that as my organisation is only at stage 1 of the Capability Maturity Model it will be too ambitious to make the leap to Grid Computing. And is it a sledge hammer to crack a nut anyway ?

I don't see "grid computing" getting to be that big - not anytime soon anyway.

I mean we are still trying to get a good grip on LANs and the Web.

Grid somputing is going to get big. Web-services are going to be the key to a global internet based grid. Even already it has stepped out of academia. Lots of companies are getting rich from grid based technologies.
