If I'm currently running Dynamics 7.5 on SQL 7, do I need to upgrade to SQL 2000 to run Dynamics 8.5?
Or can I run Dynamics 8.5 on SQL 7, THEN upgrade to SQL 2000?
Thanks.

microsoft says 7.0 with sp4 is ok. But from experience, I find it more desireable to upgrade the database first before doing a upgrade on GP

according to Microsoft's website, the database requirements are as such

Database requirements
Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 SP4

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition SP3a

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (64-bit)

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) SP3a

Operating system
Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3 or SP4

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition

MSDE 2000 can be installed on a non-server operating system. However, it is recommended that you install on a server operating system. The only non-server operating systems supported are Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP1a or SP2 and Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3 or SP4. See Note 5 at bottom of page.

Hardware resources
RAM:
512 MB minimum
Set virtual memory size to at least the amount of RAM on the computer, plus 11 MB (Expand to 1 GB, if necessary)

CPU:
Dual Pentium III 800-Mhz or equivalent single processorMake sure processor can be upgraded

CD-ROM:
Required

Network card:
32-bit, 10/100 MB Ethernet Full Duplex

Disk configuration
Minimum for Microsoft SQL Server only:
RAID 5 for operating system, applications, and SQL database log and data files
More available disks will improve Microsoft SQL Server performance
Recommend using a dual-channel fast and wide SCSI-2 controller

Recommended for Microsoft SQL Server only:
RAID 1 for operating system and applications
RAID 5 for SQL database log and data files
RAID configurations are not required for an MSDE 2000 installation; however, it can be implemented

Hope that helps.

All I really need to know for sure is if Great Plains 8.5 WILL run on SQL 7...

Can you post the link of where you found the database requirements you originally posted.
I looked all over that site for them and couldn't find them.
Thanks a lot.

Ok.
That is for 8.0
I need to know for 8.5

this is rumour, but from a good source

Some news about Microsoft Great Plains 8.5
Microsoft Great Plains is expected to release version 8.5 in October of this year. I’ve just found a couple of technical tidbits about it.

There will be only two upgrade paths to version 8.5. You can upgrade directly to 8.5 from either version 8.0 or 7.5. If you are running a lesser version than 7.5, you’ll need to upgrade to 7.5 first and then move to 8.5.

Microsoft Great Plains 8.5 will also support Microsoft SQL Sever 2000 and SQL Server 2005. Support for SQL Server 7 will be dropped.

Ya.
I caught that in a google search on some site.
I wonder how I can find out for sure...

Here is the latest information we have been given:

There will NOT be a Great Plains 8.5 - the next version coming out towards the end of the year is Great Plains 9.0.
You will be able to upgrade from Great Plains 7.5 or 8.0 directly to 9.0.
SQL Server 7 will NOT be supported with Great Plains 9.0. here is a list of the supported versions:

1. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition SP 3a or later
2. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition SP 3a or later
3. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition (MSDE) SP 3a or later
4. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Workgroup Edition SP3a or later
5. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition
6. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
7. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (Formerly called MSDE)
8. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition
(NOTE: MSDE is only for Great Plains Standard)

Exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks a bunch.
By the way...where was your source for that info if you don't mind me asking...do you have a link to it?

Part of my info just came from various conversations we've had with Microsoft and attending the Microsoft Partner Conference. For the other part, here is a link to the info on CustomerSource - you need to be a current Great Plains customer and have a valid login to be able to get to this:
