We have a client who was advised to purchase his upgrade to Great Plains Pro version 8.0 with the SQL 2000 Runtime. We were assured that this would work on a peer to peer network using Windows XP Professional. Wrong! Further information indicated that the SQL 2000 Runtime required Windows 2003 Server to run on. We suggested to the client that they throw away the SQL 2000 Runtime and purchase the Full SQL product which could then be put onto the Windows XP Professional in a peer to peer arrangement and install Great Plains Pro version 8 in this environment. We need someone to verify that our suggestion is correct. Can anyone do that for us? Thanks in advance for your response.

Looks like the only versions of SQL that you can install on a non-server OS are MSDE or Developer. Here is a link:
MSDE will not work with GP Pro and Developer is not supposed to be used in a production environment.

Also, as far as I understand, there is no technical difference between SQL Server 2000 Runtime and SQL Server 2000 Standard (or what many people call full version). The only differences are the cost and what the licensing agreement allows you to do with it - runtime can only be used to run GP, nothing else, not even ISV products for GP.

Also, I don't think GP on SQL has ever been supported in a peer-to-peer environment. Or, atleast it hasn't in a long time. That's officially supported. I have had a couple of clients who did it anyway and it worked. But if you ever have to call for support the first thing they'll tell you is that it's not suported.
