grayscale raster graphic in a Black and white printer

i use ImageMagick to convert any graphic format in pcl raster.

if i have grayscale jpeg and if i convert it in a pcl raster, it's succesful in laser colorjet (4700) but it's only a black rectangular in a b/w lasejet (8100) why?
is there an option?

how do applications such WORD to print in grayscale?

I can only assume that IM produces a PCL Color file from a color image. See if there isn't some kind of command line flag for grayscale output.
