grayscale photos print on all four plates

We routinely convert photos to grayscale for our newspaper's grayscale pages, but on the rare occasion we use a grayscale photo on a process color page, we get the image on all four plates: CMY&K.

In the end, the photo looks "gray" if the registration is perfect, but it would be even sharper if the image was on the K plate only.

We're using InDesign 2.0 on a PC with Acrobat Professional to make the PDF.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I use to see this years ago when the grayscale file was saved out as a eps file instead of tiff. If it saved out as a tiff - double check that the file is being colorized by process black only and not a custom color created in Indesign.
