Has anyone ever run across this? When I open certain grayscale images that were sent to me from other people, they sometimes have a magenta cast to them. It really didn't matter usually when I used them in the newspaper. But when i used them in publication that was 4 color, it actually printed that magenta cast!!! What's up with that?

Anyone else with this experience or knowledge to correct, I would appreciate any assistance.

I had that problem a few years ago, and it turned out that the grayscale image was actually CMYK or some other color mode. Changing it back to grayscale and ensuring it only printed on the black plate usually solved the problem.

Yeah. I made sure that the it was indeed grayscale. I will have to go try to convert to something else and back to CMYK. I wasn't sure if maybe it had something to do with color profiles or what.

thanks.

Hi,

Try this faq229-2082 if that doesn't work try un-installing and re-installing.

Hope this helps!

Is the grayscale image saved out as a eps file instead of a tiff? I have ripped down files to a hi-end ripping station and what I though would be black would be rip as 4/c. after going back and saving as a tiff file it solved the problem.

i'll have to check the files but I'm pretty sure they are TIFs. I try to avoid using eps until it's absolutely necessary, which is pretty much never.

This is a little confusing. Leaving aside the cast on your monitor (which could be anything), how could a black image on a single plate show a cast in print?

A few possibilities: Your printer isn't using a pure black ink. This is sometimes done to get richer blacks, but will sometimes show a slight cast. Somehow, I don't think this is the answer as cyan is usually used for this.

Another possibility is color management. Go to Edit > Color Settings and turn off color management. Resave your files and try again. Also, if it is being imported into a page layout package, check to see that it isn't altering your images in any way. Maybe it has it's own color management, or perhaps your image has been recolored using a 'darker' black (ie. a black comprising of several inks).
