Grayed-Out Filters & Effects

Does anyone know why over half of my filters and effects stay grayed-out all the time??? I have a student version of AI 10, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. Several friends who have regular versions have the same problem. For example, under the effects menu, the artistic, brush stroke, distort, and several other filters are all grayed-out. I tried rasterizing my images, but it doesnt change anything. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks!

This is just an idea: For whatever reason, most of those filters only work when the document is in RGB mode (for use on a computer screen). If your document is in CMYK mode (for printing) then many of the filters don't work. I don't know why this is, but see if you can change your mode and I bet most of them will show up.
