have you check your bios to see if you can disable it ?

Some mother boards and bios do not offer a way to disable. Have you tried removing the old drivers from Add/Remove programs and device manager? Also, in device manager if the old display adapter just re-installs, disable it in device manager in all profiles and it will appear from now on as a conflict with a red "X". This is acceptable and sometimes is the only solution. Then install the latest new drivers for the new card. If this is a PCI card, you might try another slot if the above doesn't help. It may not detect as plug and play until you install the latest drivers. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

Need to know if this is an AGP or PCI video card. If it's AGP, then the BIOS would surely have a way to disable it. During bootup (POST), look for the option to enter setup (usually involves hitting F1, F2, Delete, or ESC).

If this is a PCI card and your board doesn't have an AGP slot, make sure that upgrading the video is an option. I can't imagine a motherboard that doesn't have the setting in the BIOS or as a jumper. If anyone knows of one that exists, let me know!!

nobrain, I think that unless the BIOS disables onboard video, there's no way to get the video card to be the primary device, no matter what you do inside Windows...

I just went through this with an old HP Pavilion that had onboard video. NO way to disable on board video except in device manager. After it was disabled in all hardware profiles the new driver was installed and the new AGP card worked fine. There is NO jumper and NO bios setting to disable the onboard video. On this particular HP That I installed the video card on. (I should've added) "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

cool...I just have never seen one yet! I'll take your word for it!!

cdogg,
Here is another thread on this issue:

I could be controlled by a ROM chip that can be flashed in some cases. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
