I have a pretty basic graphics card, and I find that director seems to be quite sticky, when it comes to rewinding or forwarding quicktime movies, would this be the cause. I have also found that for some unknown reason, most of the text on the interface has turned tiny, and I have difficulty reading it. I have reinstalled it to no effect.

Well, the problem could be the processing speed of your computer as well as the graphics/video card. It could be there is not enough RAM on the computer for it to handle playing in Director. File size can be an issue as well. And by sticky, do you mean sluggish? As for the text on the interface, is it Director text or field text member? Does the text look readable when you edit it from the stage or when you are not playing the movie in Director. I remember Director showing one's text from a text member at readable size when you edit, but as soon as you play it it returns to its size set in the text inspector. It sounds like that could be the problem.

yes its sluggish, and its the text on the palettes, etc thats small, I'm pretty sure its a windows problem. Thanks for your reply.
