Continuing with the Grammar Test:
Grammar Test

I scored 9/10 on this one.

Excellent. Another 10/10

And No 10 contains one of my particular pet peeves...

Ouch! Scored 10/10 in the first test, but only 7/10 in this one... [blush]

These were my weak points:
Code:
[COLOR=white white]4 The correct answer: C lay;
My answer: A laid <--I'll probably never get that right ;-)
7 The correct answer: C were;
My answer: B was (This is true conditional, not an ordinary IF-clause of course...)
9 The correct answer: C we;
My answer: B me and the other
Didn't feel comfortable with "we"...[/color]

Still not too bad, I think. :eek:)

[blue]An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind. - "Mahatma" Mohandas K. Gandhi[/blue]

7/10
Myself coulda do it more better lol ;)

That one was more difficult but I think the result is not that bad.

Code:
[white]I'm with you on #4. That issue is one that I've always had trouble with[/white]

even worse 7/10 [consoling thought, US grammar]

You got 9/10 correct.

I feel bad/badly/awful/terrible about my choice for #6.

8/10
The affect of this test is that I feel badly.

I got 10/10, but guessed the 'lay / laid / lied' one.

Number 3 is my pet peeve, closely followed by using 'myself' instead.

I used to feel badly, but then I took the gloves off.

8/10, with 4 & 7 incorrect (and I actually considered the correct answers, too, after ruling out one obviously incorrect choice). I answered these two same as MakeItSo. Well, not that bad for me.

I got 10/10 on the first one, but 7/10 on this one... I think I need to lie down, now... I need to sulk...

Peace,

10 out of 10 again!!!

I, too, used to have terrible trouble with Lie vs. Lay. I made up the following mnemonic to keep them straight:
Code:
[COLOR=white][b][u]lie[/u][/b] means to rec-[b][u]lie[/u][/b]-ne (recline)
[b][u]lay[/u][/b] means to p-[b][u]lay[/u][/b]-ce (place)

Maybe some of you will find that as helpful as I have.[/color]

9/10. Messed up on the subjunctive.

But what if he actually is the coolest guy in school, and he happens to act like it?

==> But what if he actually is the coolest guy in school, and he happens to act like it?
Then you wouldn't use the subjunctive case.

That's what I assumed, which is why I got 9/10. How am I to know from the sentence that he isn't the coolest guy in school? Isn't the correct answer vague as a result?

The "as if" is the clue to the subjunctive. It shows that things are not as they appear.

9/10. I know the difference between lie and lay so I chose lied. I just didn't know that the past tense of lie is lay.
