Take the Free Online English Grammar Test which consists of 100 questions with 16 levels of increasing difficulty!

• Every joy is beyond all others. The fruit we are eating is always the best fruit of all.
• It is waking that understands sleep and not sleep that understands waking. There is an ignorance of evil that comes from being young: there is a darker ignorance that comes from doing it, as men by sleeping lose the k

My initial score was 96/100. One error (#10) was a misclick so I am not counting it.

I noticed a grammar error which was repeated at least three times: the use of can instead of may. May I increase my score by one point for each of these errors? [smile]

There were also several questions where different answers were grammatically correct depending on the situation. The trick seemed to be to keep the situation as simple as possible, assuming the least. I found that for a couple of questions, it was quite impossible to guess which meaning was intended.

My incorrect answers: (spoilers - take the test before peeking!)
[white]31 - My answer: wrote, was watching. I don't know the correct answer. This question was very difficult to answer because it depended on the subtle meaning one desires to convey.
76 - Incorrect answer: can't, is. Correct answer: couldn't, was. I disagree. I think several answers could be correct depending on the meaning desired.
77 - I chose "fixed" for the second answer. I see that "had fixed" is correct. I was just going too fast... if I'd stopped to read the final sentence carefully I'd have noticed the mistake.
98 - I chose the comma; however, the correct answer uses a semicolon. A true mistake.[/white]

I give up. These people actually demand my last name and email address before proceeding. How gauche!

Put in fake info. You can take the test and get the results. If you can't think of anything, use Smith, Jones, and smith@jones.com.

Yes, but you can put in what you like...

96/100 here as well

[white]
31: yes, I got this one wrong as well. I have no idea how you determine which is the 'correct' answer
51: I know the rule, and failed to apply it. Silly me
98: I also chose the comma...
100: I chose the second of the two coloned answers.
[/white]

98/100

[white]I think there are three valid answers for #31, each in a different tense, but you have maintain parallelism for each one.
I also missed #77[/white]

Good Luck

[white]Besides the already mentioned questions, did anyone find that a couple of the questions had more than one right answer, and that one or two questions had only one 'right' answer, but the answer was awkward?[/white]

CC I agree with your observation concerning Q31 about what should be the case, but I don't think that the author's of the page agree...

I also agree with your second observation

I got 96/100

I missed 31, 76 and 77 like most people by the look of things. I also missed 96:

Because/Because of/Since/In spite your recommendation, I'm going to Mexico on vacation this year.

I answered 'Since'. It didn't seem to scan as well as 'Because of' but I'd always been taught never to start a sentence with 'because'. What are the proper rules for this?

[blush] 94/100 only... [/blush]
Was too lazy to explicitely look for the mistakes in that output window though.

I'm another 96%. I also got 31 and 76 wrong. It seems to me that if a collection of intellegent people, all of whom have an interest in language, is getting the same questons wrong then maybe it's the question that's wrong, not us.
