Graduation from colour to white

On a web page I'm trying to show a horizontal band graduating from "#9999CC", which is purple, to white from right to left. I will start with a 1 px high by 524 px wide canvas and use it as a table cell background. (a) how do I do it? (b) Should I save the result as a gif or a jpeg?

I find PSP amazingly unhelpful, eg Add Mask From Image Dialog Box in the Help Index does not tell you how to open the dialog box. (!!I just copied and pasted these words from the Help screen and look what I got:

Here's how to do it (in PSP7)

[li]Create a new image (File/New...) that's 524x1 with 16 million colours[/li]
[li]Click on the blocks above the pallette (top-right) to set the foreground to 9999CC and the background to white.[/li]
[li]Click on the little black arrow in the box under where it says "Styles"[/li]
[li]A little pop-up appears with four icons on it, pick the second one (vertical stripes)[/li]
[li]Now click in the middle of the Styles box. A dialogue should appear labelled "Gradient". Pick the topmost "style" button and set the angle to 90. Click OK[/li]
[li]Select the Flood Fill tool (paint pot with a drop coming out of it). Click somewhere in your image (easier if you zoom in a bit first via View menu)[/li]
[li]You should then have the image you require.[/li]
[/ul]
As to which format to use, try 'em both and see what you like. If it's important to match the exact shade of purple, use a gif, if it isn't, use a jpg. If you really want to be an individual, use a png!

The help file's probably one of the weakest parts of PSP, but stick with it - it's an amazingly powerful program. FWIW you open that dialogue from the menu: Masks/New/From Image...

That was very helpful and time saving, thank you. The gif was the best, the jpeg and png showed vertical bands more.
