Gradient Tool

Hello guys. I'm trying to use the Gradient fill tool to get a color brown over top red but i can not get it to go like that. It just keeps streching from left to right brown to red. I must have something set wrong cause i have looked and tried to change to different gradient styles like radial and the others but i cant seem to get brown over top of red. Thanx for the help
 
I'm not sure I understand your question either but maybe you mean this ...

Create layer one.
Pick red from color picker and fill with red red.

Create layer two (make sure it's on top and selected).
Pick brown in color picker.
Select gradient tool - foreground color (brown) to transparent.
Hold shift and drag across the red selection. Depending on how much you drag will determine how much brown covers the red.
