I want to fill a rounded rectangle with gradient overlay - but it fills everything and I want it just to fill the rectangle. How do I do this?

Using rounded Rectangular tool draw the recrangle

Rught mouse click inside the rectangle
Click make selection

Use the gradient fill to fill only the selection

You've probably got your rounded rectangle on a background layer or a layer that is filled with colour. Create the rectangle on it's own layer (so it's surrounded by transparency) then you can create a gradient overlay WITHOUT having to define a selection.
