Gradient as background?

Just starting with Flash, and have a pretty basic query.
To harmonise with printed material, I need to include a simple 2-colour linear gradient as the background.
I know how to make a gradient in Flash, but can't find a way of setting it as a background 'colour'; and I know I can import a gradient as an image, and put it on a background layer – but this would presumably not reach to the edges of any size of user monitor, like a background does. I don't want an area of gradient with some other (flat) colour around it.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for this quick answer. You say "use a gradient background in the body tag of your .html, in which the movie is embedded" – can you spell this out in easy steps? I tried starting an html doc in Dreamweaver, and was going to embed the Flash pages in it; but couldn't find how to do gradeient background in Dreamweaver either. As you see I'm at real novice level.
Thanks again.
