We are presently in the midst of upgrading from v6 to v8. We have some security setup in v6 but because of the time it takes to give each individual rights etc we never really went completely into it. Now with v8 and Advanced Security we are going to focus more now on rights. Plus we have far many more users now.

My question is during our testing/upgrade I would like to start working on security with v8. This way when we are ready to go live all security is in place. Since our v6 was never really set up the way we wanted I want to make the changes in v8 and pressure those changes from the database files involved so they can then be used after the upgrade. What tables would I need to pressure before the live upgrade so my changes I make now are not overwritten. I would think that I could just do a DTS Import from the test system where I set up the v8 security into the live datatables.

Thanks

I would recommend waiting until you are on V8.0 and then using the By Menu view of Advanced Security to setup your security. You can then use the By Dictionary view for any fine tuning.

I say this because of a number of new windows have been added and old windows removed and also some windows may have had their internal resource IDs changed. The security records from a v6.0 system may not be as valid in a v8.0 system.

Note that with Advanced Security you can import and export the settings as XML between your test and live systems.

Dave thanks for your help.

I realize I was not going to try and transfer security setting from v6 to 8. I was setting them up in 8 because we are going to upgrade soon. But my concern was how to preserve them so when the data is brought over to v8 I do not loose my work. You did answer my question. I will export the security settings prior to transfer of database and then import the security setting once the upgrade is complete.

Thanks again.
