Hi, My wife has a database program for her church that is called Church Management Solutions. It uses the Corel Paradox ver 8 for the database. Here is my problem: She has a database that she uses which is on a zip disk. There is another database that is located on the hard drive. The database on the hard drive is working fine; the program launches and opens without any problem. My wife's database is suddenly not able to open anymore. When she tries to open it she gets the following message "Unexpected: General Protection Violation. Press OK, then save documents and exit Paradox.
If the problem persists: press 'Abort' to terminate Paradox." I have to click Abort in order to get out of the dialog. I'm thinking that somehow the database has been corrupted. It is a W2K SP4 machine. No updates of any kind had been run between the times it last worked and when it stopped working. Is there a fix for this or a way of repairing the database or at the very least, a way of extracting the data so she does not have to start over. This is a database that has taken years to compile. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. : )

You might try running the table repair utility to verify the table on zip disk.

Should be under Tools menu.

I would, however, use File Manager to copy the files from the zip disk to a location on the hard drive as a backup, PRIOR to using the table repair utility. You might even want to do the verify/repair on the copy on HD rather than the one on Zip.

Also, how large is the table? And what is the BlockSize and Table Level reported in table repair?

Are you CERTAIN that you have extra space on the Zip disk?

Thanks for your reply, Tony. How do I run the table repair utility? When I open the database that is working, I see how to get to it but I can't even open the database on the zip disk so I can't launch the application ( or I don't know how to open that database) to run the repair utility. Is there another way of opening the database to run the utility? There is plenty of room on the zip disk for this database but I have also copied it to the HD and it still will not open. The total size of the database is 32.7 MB with a file count of 1,120.

If you only have Runtime, the developer of that application may or may not have given you a way to run Table Repair.

Look for tutil32.fdl on your hard drive. Run it with your version of Paradox.

Again, it may or may not have been included by the developer.

If not, get ChimneySweep. If this program is critical to you/wife, get it anyway. :)

OK, They had the utillity so I ran it on all 171 .db files and it repaired 3 of the tables. But, I still get the same message when I try to launch the database. Any other ideas?

Are you using Full Paradox or Runtime?

Do you have .fsl, .lsl, .ssl, and .rsl files? Or .fdl, .ldl, .sdl, and rdl files?

If you have Runtime, and particularly if you only have the ?dl versions of files, you may have to go back to the original developer to get the program back up and running.

However, if you have the full version of Paradox, you can try opening the .db file directly (File | Open | Table).

OK, Tony. I have solved my problem. What I did was this: I figured out that there we really two databases the she was using, one called House and another called Person. So, I copied the other persons working database folder to the location of my wife's. Then I took the House and Person databases from my wife's folder and had them replace those files in the other person's copied database folder. When I launched it, it opened up with my wife's database! I suppose that the problem must have been with one of the other databases in my wife's folder that was not essential for my wife's database. Thanks so much for your help!

BTW it was just the Runtime and not the Full version.
