Wow - today is my day for questions on 2008 it seems.

I'm in the process of deploying several Windows 2008 member / resource servers -- I plan to keep these a long time and don't want to come back and have to switch from 2003 to 2008 in 2 years or something.

Right now, in the immediate short term, 4-8 months, I don't plan to bring in a Windows 2008 domain controller (budget issues mostly).

My domain is Windows 2003 Native (as is the forest) with one 2003 DC and one 2003 R2 DC. I have no Vista machines on my network at this time. Is there any way under XP or Windows 2003 to configure and manage the new GPO and ADMX formats for Windows Server 2008?

I've done a little searching but nothing has popped out at me yet, hoping maybe somebody already crossed this bridge.

No, you have to manage the new ADMX/L formats using Vista or Win2k8. You can do this from a member server even though your DCs are still 2k3 though.

baddos - gotcha! i should have realized that, these late nights and early mornings preparing data or moving data are starting to affect the brain!

Thanks

Mark

i agree with you all here, my problem is do i set the new server machine with win2k3 or go for it and set a win2k8 to take over the roll of the win2k3 i have 1 vista and 80 xp's as i move on in time i have been buying workstations that are compatable for vista.
having spent out on a new server ready for the next 6 years of life i feel i should load the win2k8 64 bit etc etc...

will all my GPO's work with the win2k8 as well as new GPO's for vista when set!!

your thoughts welcome

You should be able to upgrade to 2k8 on your DC fine without worrying about your GPOs not working. Any new setting that doesn't work on XP or 2000 will be ignored when the client processes the GPO.
