I work in a school and have several gpo's setup to allocate department software, system wide software is held in separate gpo's such as Acrobat, Shockwave etc, would I be better to bundle all the system wide software in one gpo.
Without knowing more about your configuration., it is difficult to advise. What I would say is that if you need to control who gets certain applications because of license restrictions, you might be better off leaving things as they are.

As thelad says we could do with more info. I've setup several school networks and have found it best to break your computers down into groups e.g. Department Offices perhaps under an OU called Offices
Offices
- Maths
- English
and so on. Then do the same for classroom and lab PC's.
I'd try to avoid system wide GPO's for apps it will cause you a massive headach if you need to update shockwave or Acrobat as all PC's will do this in one go. If you have 400 or so PC's like some schools i know this can become a problem.
