Hello,

I was asked a question today... - what protocol is used for GPOs? How can GPOs be monitored on a network traffic analyzer?

I'm googling but can't find anything - would appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Hi Rockstar,

A GPO is made up of two bits. The Group Policy Container and the Group Policy Template. GPC data is stored in AD (so LDAP traffic), the GPT is stored in the sysvol directory on the server so smb/cifs traffic.

e.g.
GPT \\dc\SYSVOL\yourdomain.com\Policies\<gpo guid>
GPC cn=guid,cn=policies,cn=system,dn=yourdomain,dn=com

GPTs contain the ADM data, scripts, and application MSIs. GPCs contain the normal windows policies.

A star for ashpp for that answer, and to TheLad for the ports answer.

Thank you very much for your answers, I was stumped yesterday when I was trying to find what type of network traffic it was causing. thank you!!!
