I'm testing software installation via GPO.

Windows 2000 DC
Windows XP Pro Client

Created test OU under the DOMAIN
Added test PC to the test OU
Created new test group policy for the test OU
Created software package to be applied to the Computer

Office XP admin installation point exists

I'm not getting any errors in the application log. When i create the package it tells me it was successfully created in the logs. I ran Secedit to refresh the policy.

Not sure why it doesn't work.

On XP you use gpupdate rather than secedit.

In the GPO properties Have you applied apply group policy and read permissions for the computer/user?

Can you access the source installation folder (check permissions etc)?

Does it work if you assign the package to a user instead?

Hey red

I did have access to the source installation folder.
I had tried installing to the user account without it working either.
I did apply "apply group policy" and "read" permissions to the user and computer account.
I was applying secedit on the server, i'll run gpupdate on the client.

Now as the PC boots up, after applying computer settings, it lists applying software installation settings and then says applying managed software "ms office xp".

When i logon though it's not listed when assigned to the computer. I also tried it again assigned to the user and it worked fine.

First problem was not refreshing local PC policy. Now the problem is with the computer account.

Does the computer account have secuirty access to the administritive install point?

I just ran RSOP.MSC to check the logs and it's saying it didn't apply because the installation source is not available. I just realized the i had only given domain users access to the folder and not computers.

I then got an error stating Group Policy Framework should call the extension in the synchronous foreground. I enabled this policy.

Now i again get the error stating :The installation source for this product is not available. Verify the source exists and that you can access it. The user and computer both have rights to the shared source folder. Not sure why it wouldn't work.

I noticed something new. When i am on the domain accessing the shared drive where the admin installation point is located i can run the installation from setup.exe If i try installing with the runas it tells me the location could not be found (x:\source\setup.exe) even though i'm currently in that directory.

Any ideas?

Thanks
