We are doing server upgrades for a company. We attach the new server to the network and it runs script (generating the backup and such).

Sometimes there is a GPO error and then we have to send the new server back and have the load put on there again.

I would like to know what causes the GPO error. Someone mentioned if there is a loss of power or if the modem is not seated correctly (it comes loose during shipping so we have the tech reseat it) that can cause the error.

any thoughts or advice?

Sometimes there is a GPO error and then we have to send the new server back and have the load put on there again.

Specifically, what is the error you are receiving? How do you know it's a GPO error? You send the new server back where? And what is the "load" being "put" on the server?

A policy "error" would not have anything to do with loss of power or a modem seated improperly, per se.

If the server loses power, then the server of course will not work altogether. If the only connection to your DC is via modem, then of course the policies will not apply if connectivity is lost.

You need to be more specific with your question. Supply information that can be used to determine what the issue is. Are you seeing any policy processing errors in the event log? What is the GPRESULT output? Is this a machine policy? What does the policy do specifically? If it runs a script, what does the script do?

I hope you find this post helpful,

Thanks for responding.

A liitle background....

I am a technician. I do server upgrades for Firestone. the old server is in place when I get there. The new server, is purchased from IBM and is shipped to Insight (my company) and they program it and then send it to the individual Firestone stores. They program it to, once attached to the network, go out and find the backup and automatically start transfering that stores database and whatever else they put on there. It takes anywhere 0.5 hrs to 2 hrs depending on that stores database. It is a hands off process, once the new server is done, I switch out the old one and put the new one in its place.

Now to my question...

Sometimes when we hook up a new server to the network the script does not run. I call into the helpdesk and they always ask me, "did I reseat the modem" or was there a loss of power at any time"? No and no. They say well there was a GPO error and the server has to be sent back to Insight so the can put the load on it again (I am assuming that is what ever program they install so that the server goes out and searches for the back up and runs the script automatically once attached to the network onsite) and ultimately they reschedule the site.

So I was wondering what causes the GPO error so that I can know how it can be avoided. Like I said I am the tech onsite so I don't get to interpret what goes on. I see the script run and all of the things it downloads on my end, but they access it remotely and know what is going on too.

You still need to be more specific.

You say there is a GPO error. Is the server a DC or is receiveing a GPO from a DC?

Running GPUPDATE /FORCE should make it get whatever GPOs it needs.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks again for responding. That is a really good question. I am not sure what they already have programmed on the server before it gets sent to the individual stores. I would assume that it is recieveing a GPO from a DC because the help desk thinks that whatever specific action it is we do causes the error. If it was already on there then they wouldn't be saying we were the cause.

I understand now that you would need more specifics. As I said I am the technician so I can only see so far. But, I will be looking more into it to see what else I can find out.

You post was helpful.
