GP Data Export Question

I've just been told that I have until noon on Monday (1/19/2004) to export "all of the G/L data" from GP (version unknown right now) to a .csv format. Apparently this wasn't supposed to be needed until late February but the conversion project is amazingly ahead of schedule.

Although I've worked with computers x38 years and have a lot of database experience, I know nothing about GP itself.

From what I read here, there is a data import feature. Is there a similar export or even a "table > save-as" command available? Other than ODBC connections - which, due to our security setup, will require me to ask a DBA for his/her assistance - any other ideas on how to quickly extract *all* of the data from the GP G/L tables?

As always at Tek-Tips, thanks in advance for your hints/comments/drink recipes (it's going to be a long, long weekend in Olympia, WA USA I'm thinking ... <g>)

Best,

Tom

If your DB is in SQL might I recommend looking at the following tables and just exporting from them:

1) GL00100 is all of your chart of accounts
2) GL20000 is your current year GL
3) GL30000 is historical years
4) GL10110 holds the beginning of the year balances*
5) GL10111 is more of the year end balances

Might I suggest some homemade lynchburg lemonade (mmmmmm JD)

I also have been known to use Explorer (depending on the version of GP you are on) to export pieces of data. This works pretty well too --- depends on the application accepting things I guess.

after re-reading your message --- look at explorer --- it will do almost anything

Thanks a bunch.

One other quick (?) question - if the db isn't in SQL, what will it be in??? Again, I know nothing about GP itself ... just a lot of other 'stuff'.

Thanks!

And thanks for the drink recipe ... I'll give it a shot (or two) <g>

Depends on the version of GP actually.

Look at the ODBC drivers on the machine. There should be one for Dynamics. You should be able to see if it is pointing towards a SQL server or what.

I THINK (don't hold me to this one) when people went to Dynamics 6.0 that they had to be on SQL 2k -or- Pervasive SQL. I am not framiliar with versions earlier than 5.5, so if you are there - god's speed.

The Explorer function that came along with 5.5 & 6 (when it got acceptable to use in my opinion) is very very useful for users to get data out into Excel, Word... A bit confusing at first to use, but pretty slick after that.

Celebrated Tom's conversion last night with a Margaritta, so thanks!

When you are logged into Great Plains if you go to Help > About, you should be able to see what database you are on. All the current versions can run on MS SQL, PSQL (used to be called btrieve) and ctree.

Hopefully starting with the next version it will be MS SQL Server only. :)

Thanks all for the info. Good thing I love a challenge ... <g>

This shouldn't be a challenge. It should in fact be very very easy. Just use tExplorer as everyone has suggeested. Or export directly from the tables that jymm was so kind to list for you.

This can be done in about 5 minutes depending on how much data you have.

Got it!

Also just learned that they want only period (monthly) summary data for 2000-2003 inclusive, then all details for 2004. There has been some preliminary work done using an ODBC connection from Access - but we'll be looking at Explorer on Monday (the deadline has been magically moved after I was told that Monday was "it"). Seems to me that I should be able to export those tables via Explorer, then do a summary/rollup as needed.

Once we've completed this I'll let everyone here know how it went - and any gotchas in case someone else gets to do a fun thing like this in the future.
