Hello,
I am a new "convert" to *nix. I can make a Window$ mahine dance, but I am having serious trouble. If I could get the RedHat online, I'll be ok. That is my problem. In KDE, I get an error that the card couldn't be started. In GNOME, it'll start, but I can't get past the router. I know it's not the router, because the box I am using to post this is going through the router too.
I set the Network configuration in Linux to DHCP (which is what the router is set to do).
I even bypassed the router by hooking the cable modem directly to the Red Hat box, just to rule out that the PC and the router weren't getting along. That didn't work either.

I have been reading constantly for 2 days now, and I guess I am stuck in DOS mode (ya know, I'm used to the DOS command convention and evrything I look at for Linux looks like Greek). I am really stuck. Please help!

Hardware:
HP XE743
600MHz Celeron
512MB RAM
2 NICs (I only need one to work)
VooDoo 2 passive PCI (it helps)

I think I'll be ok with the hardware, I had Win2000 on here and it ran like a "scolded dog" (as they say here in the south) but I kept getting "compromised" (cracked and had to reformat and reload 3 times in the past month). I guess the 24.164.48.* is pretty hot with hackers, good ones too. I had complex pwds and usrnames and still got nailed even through a router. Go figure. Anyway, I need to learn *nix anyway. PLeaSe Help?

Did you run the ifconfig utiltity to see if the NIC is even up and that it has the correct TCP/IP information assigned to it? Can you ping anything from the Linux box?

Hey, thanks for the response...

I can't even get the the graphic interface. Even with the boot disk, I get the shell.

Ok..ifconfig says it's IP is the loopback. I know I set that darn thing to DHCP....let me try it again...wow..I accidently hit the wrong thing in setup and found out how to get the graphic interface. Cool problem 1 of 90 solved...89 to go!
It's taking a long time to activate...is that normal?

Guess what?
I can ping my router now, but I can't get anywhere else with it.

The output of the ifconfig command will show you the loopback interface (lo) and any other networking interfaces, such as eth0, which is your first network card installed. Is eth0 up and is it assigned an IP address? It must if you can ping the router. What is the problem now? Can you get outside of the router?
