All the articles about the patent application make one huge assumption in that because Google have applied for the patent they are suddenly using the methods and techniques. Well personally I think they are wrong! Most of the stuff in the patent has been in use for around the last 2 years and they have entered the patent application to protect it because they have moved their ranking algo on a bit more.

But there isn't any secret to getting good rankings that will survive any updates.
It's simply called making the site useful for real people.
