I don't remember what the status of Googles' Cloud and APIs was in 2004, but I would not categorize the code of Christophe CHENAVIER in faq184-5372 as API usage. It just has in common to make a request.
But it's actually the form of URLs that are used by the usual user interface and, well, that's bound to fail as user interfaces are adapted to newer HTML and design standards.
A real API would return a JSON or XML or such data format to give the essential answer and you wouldn't extract the translation from the HTML of the web interface.
You might want to consider using the API, a starting point is Just note the pricing, too:
