Hello:

If for example I type in "Australia" in Google's search box.

Google returns about 33,900,000 results.

I know my site is in the results somewhere. How can I tell where exactly my site is located in the results - i.e. is it number 10 551 in the list of 33,900,000 results?

Thanks for the link :)

Why is this against Google's ToS? It seems like a valuable service that lots of web designers would use.

Also how can Google tell if I have downloaded the tool and it is me checking the search engine result rank? A competitor can do it to me and have me bummed from Google.

Third "Fiction" Down. Basically this type of software hits the google server repeatedly to do the checking. More than humanly possible by simply doing searches. If google sees a heap of hits coming from the one IP address in a short amount of time, it's a fair bit someone is spamming their server - taking up server resources that should be kept for people to do searches.

And no, a competitor doing this would not come from your IP address. Google would be able to see if it was you or someone else doing the spamming. Hint - Find a friend, sibling or workmate who owes you a favour and uses a different ISP and is willing to let you do the link checking on their PC.

Australia is hardly a useful search term, nobody is going to search through thousands of pages to find your site! they will narrow the search down by adding words.
You need to find a phrases relevant to your site theme, subject or product and optimise your pages for those.

if you want to see if your site is in Google use the tools Google provide,

link: will check backlinks.

allinurl: will tell you how many pages are indexed.

download the Google toolbar and check your 'guesstimated' page rank on there (it's not very accurate or reliable)

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?

My site is hosted with Dell at Atlanta. I am located in Seattle. So if I ran a rank checking program - will this be fine?

I am curious to see where my page ranks in the myriad of results that the search term 'Australia' brings in. This is for purely academic purposes - I am trying to understand where my site is relative to a number of keyword searches.

Unless your site is in the top 200 results in Google, it will not be found with that program. What's more is that even though you could get away with it in your case, it's against Google's terms and regulations....(but it worked great for me :D ;) ).

Anyone have a program that can search deeper than 200 results?

Rick
