After reading many of the threads here over the last few weeks, and learning a lot, I decided that it was time to look at a few of my sites. These were done as part of a couple of courses that I did and the emphasis was very much on Keywords and page titles for SEO.

I also employed site navigation that interlinked many pages. Imagine then, my dismay when I saw that Google algorithm and how all these internal links detract from a site's PR by spreading all the PR scores over the site!

Now for the questions!

Should I redesign the site navigation so that I have fewer links to the less important pages?

or Are my main navigations visible to the Spider as they have some JavaScript around them?

Thanks

You've seen the Google algorithm? I thought they kept it secret.

My understanding is that when Page A links to Page B, Page B derives some PR from Page A. Page A doesn't lose anything.

So yes, the internal links "spread" the PR from the home page to the rest of the site, but not in the sense of redistributing a finite number of points from one page to the others. Think of it more like one page infecting the others with its higher PR.

You're OK if (as you do) you use Javascript to apply fancy tricks to standard <a> tags calling standard URLs. You get into trouble if you use Javascript to actually display the links and control where they go to (like a lot of drop-down menu scripts). You can see what SE spiders see by going to

Many Thanks Chris,

I haven't actually SEEN the algorithm! lol .. suppose I'd be off making a small fortune if I had! lol.. more like I've seen articles on it and PR calculators that give you some idea about your sites page rank.

Thanks for that URL as well... handy site to know about!

So, if you were me, you'd leave those navigations?

Yes I'd leave them.

Concentrate on making your site friendly to people (i.e. have good internal navigation) rather than coding to the quirks of SE spiders. Avoid techniques (like Javascript navigation) that totally shut the spiders out, but don't get so fixated on SEO that you lose sight of the main objective - building a site that people want to visit.
