Well guys...
here is what i found ...I typed the keywords in google to look how our site was doing...and then out of curiosity I picked the first listing and checked the code to see if there was something I could learn...and this is what I learnt..they dont have any keywords...and the site is at the top...any clues??
let me know what you guys think

Not knowing the specific site/keywords, I would guess:

A) the site used to have the keywords, but they've changed the site content; you can see if this is the case by looking at Google's cached copy of the page;

B) they're cloaking, giving different content to Google and the average browser;

C) other sites link to them using link text (the stuff in the anchor) that includes the keywords.

If you mean the meta tag keywords, it's because most search engines (Google included) ignore them these days. They were too open to abuse by unscrupulous webmasters.

Presumably the search terms you entered occur in the text of the site you saw. It ranks #1 (probably) because lots of other sites link to it.

thnaks guys for responding..
well..the search keywords I entered were marginally more than our site ( 1-2 )..and also it was linked by no more than 10 sites...
any alternate explanations??
For your reference...the search keyword I useed were "Industrial Computers"

what do u guys think?
thanks

Well, I checked, and there are a lot more than 10 backwards links for the #1 site.

If you meant the first site to appear, it was a sponsored link, but I'm assuming you meant the first result, which is what I'm responding to.

The reason they rank so well is that they have over 465 backwards links. Backwards links count for a ton in Google. I'd say that it's probably the one most important factor in whether or not your site ranks well. Keyword optimization comes next, but you can have all the keywords right and no rank...It's the backwards links that count for a lot. That's why they rank so high.

thannks Rick..chris and fox..
now the next question...how do you improve rankings when most of the people in the market dont believe in cross linking..
I cant think of any legitimate way of increasing the link popularity unless I personally mail all the other sites to put our link up...and we do the same..but it will take a long time..
any thoughts
thanks

That's the way I do it. I have a "template" email that I send out. I pretty much just change a few things in the letter before sending it out to personalize it (inserting the website's name instead of using the symbol I use in my template which is *put name here*). Make it look like it was hand written to that specific site. Get to the point, but make it professional. State why linking to your site would help their own. You might have to add or delete lines in different places to make it flow right, but having a template to build from helps a lot in saving time. Then I just search for my keywords...and start emailing all the sites that rank above me first, and then those that rank below me....you can continue emailing as far down the results pages as you want to go. I usually do the top 20 sites or so. Don't expect them all to link to you, for sure, but hopefully at least 1 out of 5 will--unless you're emailing sites that don't want to link to you because it would hurt their business...

Make sure that you get the maximum # of links from your own site. Make all your sites link to instead of That gives more weight to the default page there since if others happen to also link to your site, they will link to your site, not your site/index.php...

Optimize for your keywords....submit to directories....email other sites....do whatever you want--it all helps. Something you might find useful is that instead of optimizing for a "large" term like "computers", get more specific and do "computer software", that way people looking to buy computers won't have to wade through as many results to find an applicable site (which in this case isn't your own), and those searching for "computer software" are already interested in what you have to offer and will be more likely to visit your site.

Rick,

How do you figure out how many backwards links are setup?
Are backwards links the same as cross links?

JP

Rick,

Thanks for the info.
Could you explain how exactly you can tally the backward links using the Google toolbar?

JP

To the right of the PageRank bar, there's a button you can click on (with a drop down arrow)...one of the options there is "Backwards Links". Gives a decent count, but I think it only includes (at least for the most part) pages with a PR of over 4...but that might not be correct, not sure. Anyway, it works for me.

Thanks, Rick.
BTW, how do you know the numeric value of PR? My toolbar just shows a bar that is filled w/ some shaded color.
