I read an article that talked about guide lines to optimize your site for google. I tried to follow those instruction.

Now after few months that website is doing fairly good on yahoo........ But though those guide lines were for Google , it is going misreable on google

if I do search on yahoo with
Accounting Tax Service Canada

it does good

seeing a link to the article would be useful.

very competitive area. to get real results is going to take several months of serious work on the optimisation.

It's not been up long enough to be anywhere in Google yet and there are certainly not enough backlinks.
The whole site is only optimised for one phrase (Canada's Accounting and Tax Service). Some proper word research is needed to find what is actually searched on.
only 3 of the pages are reachable by crawlers and accessibility devices because of the javascript menu. (see thread253-985631 ) which I may add is only completely visible at a horizontal resolution of 1280px

Thanks for your reply. So it is eassier to achieve some results in yahoo but not in Google.

What you mean by menu " is only completely visible at a horizontal resolution of 1280px" ?

I have moinitor resolution 800/600 and i see that menu fine.
Infact menu gets adjusted at all resolutions.

thanks

maybe what you need to know and the designer of that menu needs to realise is very few people who run above 800x600 will have their browser running at full screen.
Talk about designers annoying users by forcing them into using what they decided was right simply because that's how they work. Try increasing your screen resolution then reducing the browser window.
The one thing that is important in web dev is to allow the end users to work how they want, because the back and close buttons are very handy.

Nope, it's not any easier in Yahoo, just Yahoo has different criteria for ranking than Google. And it's very easy to rank in any search engine for a phrase that has no direct competition (try the phrase in quotes). What you are seeing in Yahoo with that result is the combined ranking weight of the search words.

You are right, if you reduce the size of the window then
menu will deviate from its positon.

When you talk about backlinks, you mean links other have to my site.

I guess just me puting links to others website will not help any , right?

Just curious how did you find out out that there is no backlink?

Thanks

To find backlinks use :

link:
in Google

link: doesn't work very well at all in google it only reports a seemingly random selection of links (if any at all)

use linkdomain:domainname at Yahoo or link:domainname at MSN

yep backlinks are links to your site and having links from your site won't help rankings but does in other ways.

thanks, i tried on all three. MSN does not find anything, I do know what is wrong there.

But I tried with this other website that I have both in yahoo and google. I noticed that backlinks shown by yahoo and google are little different. Some backlink that yahoo showed, Google did not show them up, and vice versa...
there were some backlinks shown by both .....

You said previously "only 3 of the pages are reachable by crawlers and accessibility devices because of the javascript menu."

Is it something to do with javascript menus in particular, or any page that has javascript on it is completely ignored by the crawler? Even javascript put for validation purpose?

It's javascript menus full stop. Especially ones in external files.

The only links that are accessible to ALL user agents are ones that use <a href="...> directly in the page source. Javascript events are not triggered. So menus that use document.write to put the navigation onto the page are not (currently) crawled.

If you imaging that a crawler has a maximum number of characters that it will read from the source of a page, then it becomes clear.

If you have 1000 characters of javascript before you get to any actual page content and the crawler is going to index 1500 characters then you can see the problem.

I made those numbers up, but it illustrates that packing a ton of javascript (and for that matter, font tags etc) is just going to get in the way.

It's actually EASIER to make a search engine readable page than it is to make one that isn't. It's all the extra frills we add that gets in the way.
