We are looking to find a quality SIP provider to start offering as a POTS/PRI alternative. I personally like the stability of POTS and PRI but the boss wants to explore SIP trunks as an option.

What are some good affordable ones in the US?

Is a SIP trunk like a PRI where you have the SIP trunk then several channels below it?

People seem to like Broadvox. Basically look for any provider that has interop documents for the IP Office and you should be good to go.

Yes, it works like a PRI. Port 5060 is basically the D channel and the RTP ports are like the B channels.

The biggest gotcha is potentially poor audio quality if you're sharing an ISP connection with both voice and data. The second would be a router that mangles SIP packets.

I personally love Flowroute I've been with them for a couple years now, and I've had some customers use them as well. While they don't have any documents for setup on the IPO, it's extremely easy to get going.

I've only had one outage in that time due to some equipment catching fire or something.
I this is for a business, absolutely get an analog line or two as a backup. Most sip carriers (at least flowroute) will automatically forward calls to another number if it can't reach you, so that's nice.

You'll need a good internet connection. A lot of service providers these days offer SIP phone service for business and provide an SBC which is good; makes setup and security a breeze.

I used to be an ACE. Now I'm just an Arse.

we use vopi.ms

there are two different kinds of SIP trunks.

ones provided over an MPLS/P2P service that has a connection directly from the customers office with the carrier. with this the carrier and you can guarantee QoS. these usually cost $20-$30 per month as well as an more expensive MPLS connection around $250-$350 per month. these trunks could be used as primary trunks as far as reliability goes.

the other option is like voip.ms which is over just a normal or even dedicated internet connection. the difference is that internet connection is not guaranteed any sort of QoS once it leaves the local lan, so as stated more of a backup rather that primary. this solution generally cost $5-$15 per month depending on minutes and the internet connection could be as cheap as $50-$75 per month.

We use Intelepeer for our SIP trunks in the US. Easy to setup and order numbers/channels. Support is excellent. Also very easy to configure on the IPO and allow CLI passthrough by default.

I've used Sotel and am currently using Nexvortex. Both have IP Office documents available to aid in setting up the trunk. I've only had one outage with Nexvortex in ~9 months. They also have disaster recovery features allowing you to point calls for each DID towards a different IP address or phone number when your PBX is unavailable.

Anyone ever use or hear of Fusion Connect?

So you've asked for recommendations, then proceed to ignore them anyway lol :)

??? I've forwarded all the suggestions on to our sales guy and service manager. I asked about Fusion because it's who our distributor turned us on to. They were terrible, thus why I started this tread.

For internet SIP i have used Inet and Intelepeer. both have worked well for our customers. for MPLS based i have used a lot of windstream, earthlink and Verizon.

fusion bought broadvox a year or two ago, so they are the same company.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am leaning towards itelepeer just because two people said it :)

On a side note for the people who regularly install SIP trunks with IPO... How often do you not have a secondary internet source dedicated to the SIP trunks? I would imaging with our SMB market that this would be the case more often than not.

We inform the customer about the benefits and cost of a 2nd internet connection. In most cases, the financial folks squash the investment required for the 2nd connection. I believe that as time goes on and they experience a failure or two the sales side of the business will override the financial folks and put in the 2nd connection. I like Flowroute as well. Their setup is simple, and their customer service responsiveness is very good.

I have used callcentric, voip.ms and anveo for the last several years.

My favorite currently is callcentric with IPO, and although there was no setup guide, i sent support a screenshot and they guided me through the install.
