I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good resource (book, website, etc.) for learning SQL Profiler. From basics up through advanced techniques.
Most books I see cover a meriad of SQL topics, and just have a small section on Profiler and what it does.
I am looking for something that goes a little more in depth on the potential of this tool, and how to use it best and provides examples of traces for different situations.

Thanks

Well, the soapbox is to check out BOL and see if that covers enough for you.

Here is one link you can check out. It may or may not contain all the information you want or need but it is pretty good I think.

Other than that I have found that it seems that most Profiler information is located in SQL books more geared to tuning than anything else.

And of course hands on is good but can be difficult in the beginning with profiler. Great tool though for trouble shooting and monitoring activity.

Hope this helps.

Honestly, my best teacher on Profiler has been playing around with it and choosing different counters / filters and to see what they show me.

If you have decent use on a Test lab SQL Server, try playing with it there to see if you can tell who is doing what.

You might get away with doing this on a Production environment since it's only a monitor tool, but be careful as Profiler does take overhead and slow down the system somewhat while it's running.

Also, check out They tend to have articles on various pieces of SQL Server. has great technology newsletters they send out detailing things you'll never find out from Microsoft or other commericial sources. All you have to do is register with them much the same way you registered for Tek-Tips.

Hey, J.!

Have you recommended that to SQLSister for adding onto her "SQL Book References" FAQ? I don't recall seeing it on there (or anything regarding Performance Monitoring).
