I'm proficient with .Net, but my PS skills are lacking. I can fumble my way through a script, but it's tedious. I'm looking for a book/website that will help me grok how and why PS works. Not just examples of "do this or that". But understanding the core of PS.

I have the book "CLR via C#" which explains how and why the .Net framework works. I'm looking for something similar for PS. Any recommendations?

There are several resources. I would recommend Bruce Payette's book "Windows PowerShell in Action". I have the first edition covering v1. The second edition is due out later this month. As one of the PowerShell designers he covers the history, why's, and how's.

excellent, thank you. I'll probably wait until 2.0 since it's only a few more days/weeks.

Bruce's book is highly recommended. If you're looking for PowerShell as it relates to a single product, such as Exchange, there are some dedicated books as well.

thanks Pat. being a programmer my focus would be on Powershell in general, not a specific OS/Server usage of PS.

Most of the cmdlets I found on web for Exchange and Active Directory (what sparked the creation of this script) Do not exist for the versions we are currently running. For example I needed to fall back to .net DirectoryServices to query AD and WMI to query Exchange.

i get the feeling i am steering away from cmdlets myself, am sure in time i will just end up using .net through powershell
