I am teaching myself java using the following resources:

Beginning Java 2 Ivor Horton
Learning Java Niemeyer and Knudsen

I am going to to the java class at University of Westminster in March. What I would like to know, are what kind of programming chalallanges can I set myself to prove that I know the language. In particular web applications such as servlets and Beans.

I work in software QA and I don't have a programming background. A collegue suggested a calculator any other thoughts?

If you are thinking of writing some programs, trying writing a simple email client. One that sends and retrieves plain text messages. There are lots of hints and ideas out there on how to do this.

You could also try writing programs that you would find useful. If your a math student, you could write some numerical calculators and such. Basically, what ever your discipline or field of work, try to find a problem that you understand and from there use it to learn how to program.

I find that learning a new langauge is much easier when you use problems that you already know how to solve. So when you are coding in the new language, you can focus on the language, not the problem.
