Rings may have been perfectly balanced or more likely resting on a dot of glue. Surface is probably a hard plastic type material. Lighting source looks like a large soft box. When you do this right you don't need PS for anything.

Also you would want to use a Macro lens with as small an aperture as possible (and therefore a slower shutter speed) to maximise the depth of field (focus).
You would want to set this all up with the camera mounted on a tripod with multiple diffused light sources to minimise shadows. After that, you might want to colour balance in photoshop (or Gimp for that matter) if there is a slight colour cast.
