Any advice out there on Desktop NICs good for sniffer setups? Certain 3Com and Intel NICs either do not support promiscuous mode or do not pass errors up the stack. I have heard that Linksys and Dlink have cards based on Digital chips that perform all functions, Anybody have model numbers or other brand names

The only desktop (PCI) NIC supported by Sniffer is the Adaptec ANA-6911A. This is the only PCI NIC that that works in conjunction with the NAI enhanced drivers that allow you to see packets damaged at layers 1 and 2 of the OSI model

We saw a similar problem with 3Com - we found that the cheapest of NetGear cards did allow us to see malformed packets. For example - the 3Com was throughing away runt packets on us but the NetGear let them through.
