Anyone know of any good ones? Other than 3D Studio Max?

Not swift 3D either, its a piece of shiznit

You get what you pay for. 3d studio max Is probably the best out there. It's the leader in the film industry however, it is pricy, about $2800.00. swift 3d is great for simple geometrys and importing 3ds files to be used inside flash but you can't do any advanced modeling and the materials library is "well you know" . There is one other alternative gmax from discreet(autodesk)also the makers of 3D studio. There's a free version that you can download at

It's much more powerful than swift 3d and it's free. The only draw back is that there is no way to import into flash or even save as 3ds file, that I could see. You can buy the dev version (not sure of the cost) That will allow the export to 3DS file format.

well... For the quality, you can get what the movie and gaming industries are using now, Maya - I've used Maya, 3D Max and Swift 3D. Maya is by FAR the best one with the most versatility. It comes rather pricey, however. Between $10,000 and $20,000 for the Full licensed version. Although you can get it for around $5000 with their introduction specials. They just came out with a "Personal Learning Edition" version that you can download from their website for free. (130+ MB download)

hope this helps...

there is a brand new thing out there, it's called PLASMA (by discreet, just as 3dmax) especially for generating 3d webcontent (swfs) and there are some easy to understand tutorials in the help-feature (just like in flash). you can download a trial from discreets homepage (saving of files disabled). i tried it. it is quite tough to learn in comparison to those easy progs like swift, i think it's quite related to 3dmax concerning the desktop etc. just spy and try :) regards

Firegambler-

Plasma is definitely a similar look and feel to MAX, but I believe the feature set is limited to those things that can be exported to Flash as 2D or to Shockwave as 3D. The one thing I am thinking of is Shockwave has a limited particle system functionality that could not address the endless possiblilities of MAX's particle systems.
